Ellen Dieter

Biography:

San Diego painter Ellen Dieter has cultivated a lifelong synthesis of aesthetic vision, innate talent, and technical expertise that has helped her become a prolific and admired artist here and abroad. Dieter discovered a thirst for creative exploration early in life. As a natural master of texture and color, Dieter has nurtured her gift for artistic expression that has earned her international recognition and taken her around the globe.

A native of Cleveland, Ohio, Dieter began her studies at the Cooper School of Art. Her work there earned her a place at the Cleveland Institute of Art. Upon completing that phase of her education, her artistic passion carried her across the Atlantic to Paris, where she studied at L’Ecole des Arts Appliques. Over the next ten years, Dieter’s work was successfully represented at several solo exhibitions throughout France and established for her a reputation for elegant forms, economy of line, and remarkable control of the brush.

In 1989 Dieter moved to San Diego. The change of environment revitalized her unending quest for artistic expression and communication. She immediately began creating provocative and innovative pieces for both her own solo shows and for multiple-group exhibits.

Recently, Dieter opened a studio in Honolulu Hawaii, where she travels frequently during the year. The soft richness of the islands contributes to her ever evolving quest of capturing life as Dieter knows it.

Over the years, Dieter has facilitated art workshops, and taught art to both adults and children, performed as a dancer for City Moves Dance Foundation, and volunteered for such organizations as the San Diego Art Institute, the Museum of Photographic Arts, and the Arts for Healing project with Gerrit Greve. Dieter worked as a set painter for The Old Globe Theatre, and most recently worked as company manager for the Old Globe.

Throughout her long and illustrious career as an artist, Dieter’s style has continually evolved. The richness of her contemporary palette has developed over years of artistic inquiry, and she counts O’Keefe, Modigliani, Kandinsky, Hockney and others as equally powerful influences. Her work glows with rich and vibrant color and evokes timeless themes juxtaposed with reflections of memory — memories from her extensive travels throughout North America, Europe, Australia and Africa as well as her intrapersonal journeys closer to home. Dieter’s paintings are a rare and extraordinary fusion of technical skill and artistic abandon. Her organic compositions capture the ephemeral vitality of modern life.

Artist's Statement for “Choices Made”:

In my work, as in life, I am always trying to figure it out, I am constantly making choices.

My paintings are of people, buildings, landscapes, dogs, trees, every day events, abstracted. Shapes made by overlapping other shapes. Choices made while contemplating line, color, composition and form. I am inspired by and drawn to the work of abstract impressionists, enthralled by the idea of adding to and taking away in painting as well as in life. Inspiration, drawn from walks around Honolulu and its surrounding beaches, these paintings came to life in the past few months. What started out as urban landscapes morphed into abstracted life.

Painting is my obsession, my passion, my way of breathing. The world around me informs what may appear on the canvas, which may be obvious and intentional, but often unconscious. Each work inspires the next work. There is no staying still, always moving, changing, learning. I am always making choices, figuring it out.

These are CHOICES MADE….
